Paddington Academy

The ESC made a commitment to the Government backed Specialist Schools initiative aimed at improving performance in state-funded schools. Eight specially selected schools received a total of £277,000 from the ESC, which - under the Government's Specialist Schools scheme - will release a staggering £4.7m in further funding to the schools over the coming period. The ESC also announced that it would fund the building of the Paddington Academy in the heart of London.

Some of the worst schools across the UK are now being demolished and rebuilt for the local community through the Academies Programme, an initiative which couples Government and private investment. The ULT (United Learning Trust) is an educational charity specifically created to establish and manage a family of Academies, and £214,000 funding from the ESC has been donated to the new Paddington Academy. This is part of the ESC’s £1.5m pledge to support the Academy over seven years.

This new school, due to open in September 2006, will specialise in Media and Performing Arts with Business and Enterprise and offers a genuine opportunity for thousands of children to gain valuable educational and specialist skills.
