The Tanzanian Projects

The sponsored Kilimanjaro ascents of 2004 and 2005 raised over £190,000 in 2005 and ??? in 2004. As a result we were able to provide funding of £38,000 in 2004 and £50,000 in 2005 for three charitable organisations performing invaluable services in Tanzania.

The Amani Children’s Home is dedicated to protecting the country’s most vulnerable children - street-children and AIDS orphans. Since its founding by local Tanzanians in 2001, the home has rescued over 210 children from the perils of life on the streets.

The Kilimanjaro Village Education Project (VEP) has as its motto “Education is Life”, which sums up the organisation perfectly. The Project’s aim is to enhance the quality of education for village children through school renovation, teacher training and vocational instruction.

Norwegian doctor Gunnar Hjorth and his partner Tone devote nine months every year to working in the Marangu Hospital, where they treat patients too poor to pay hospital bills, administer a fund for children with severe burns, tackle the catastrophic HIV/AIDS crisis in the area and undertake many other local health-related projects.

“I just gasped out loud in the middle of the internet cafe. What a wonderful surprise your email was - thank you! And please pass our most sincere thanks to the ESC Trustees. You know how much this donation means to us and how far it will go here in Tanzania. Thank you for being an advocate for the Amani kids. I think I may dance out the cafe door!” Valerie Johnson, Director, Amani Children's Home, Tanzania
